The new plan to expand the Moscow metro toward the suburbs includes opening about 30 stations over the next five years and building another 35 by 2035.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said 12 of the stations planned under the 2035 target would be located in the Moscow region. Sobyanin said about 20 million people live in the Moscow metropolitan area and that the expansion is expected to improve the quality of life for 2 million Moscow residents and 3.7 million residents of the Moscow region.
New lines will extend around Moscow
Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov said the planned routes would reach the districts of Krasnogorsk, Khimki, Mytishchi, Balashikha, Odintsovo and Leninsky. The new stations are expected to serve about 600,000 daily passengers and reduce travel time to central Moscow to as little as one hour.
Vorobyov announced that construction of the new lines is expected to begin after 2028. The project will mark a new stage in the expansion of Moscow’s metro system, which has grown rapidly during Sergey Sobyanin’s approximately 16-year tenure as mayor.
