South Korea’s National Intelligence Service is continuing to assess the leadership dynamics in North Korea and is trying to determine whether Kim Jong-un has a son. If the existence of such a child is confirmed, he is believed to be Kim Ju-ae’s older brother.
The intelligence service continues to view Kim Ju-ae, who is believed to have been born in 2013, as the most likely future candidate to lead North Korea. According to the service’s assessment, even if the existence of a son is established, he does not appear likely to succeed Kim Jong-un under current circumstances.
Assessment of the North Korean leader’s other children
South Korean intelligence also assesses that Kim Jong-un has a younger child whose gender has not yet been determined. Work continues to establish the number of Kim Jong-un’s children and the possible order of succession.

Kim Ju-ae’s visibility at state events
Kim Ju-ae has increased her public presence since she was first shown in North Korean state media in 2022. She has accompanied her father at various events, including military parades and missile tests.
South Korean intelligence described Kim Ju-ae in January 2024 as the most likely successor to the North Korean leader. Succession discussions returned to the agenda after Kim Jong-un visited the family mausoleum, which has symbolic significance for North Korea’s ruling dynasty, with his daughter on January 1.
