Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee announced that former President Robert Kocharyan and his son, Sedrak Kocharyan, were detained as part of a criminal investigation.
According to the committee’s statement, six people were detained in the investigation. The committee said those detained were believed to be connected to criminal schemes and included Kocharyan’s son and other individuals.
Searches conducted at addresses linked to the Kocharyan family
The committee said searches and other investigative measures were carried out on August 25 at several dozen addresses linked to Robert Kocharyan and his family members.
Bagrat Mikoyan, the former president’s chief of staff, said Kocharyan was taken to the Anti-Corruption Committee on the morning of August 25. Security officers entered the apartments of Kocharyan’s sons, Levon and Sedrak Kocharyan.
Charges brought by the committee
The Anti-Corruption Committee alleged that evidence had been obtained indicating that the former president had acted in prior agreement with people close to him, abused his office and misappropriated state property through various contrived justifications.
The statement also alleged that certain valuable assets of public and economic significance had been acquired at prices well below their market value. These statements reflect the framework of the charges in the criminal investigation; no court ruling confirming the allegations was cited.
