The expansion of US restrictions on Cuba’s energy sector has drawn criticism from United Nations human rights experts. The experts called on Washington to lift the sanctions and end hostile actions against Cuba.
The new measures announced on July 23 have made fuel imports even more difficult at a time when Cuba is facing severe fuel shortages. The country recently experienced its third major nationwide power outage.
Power outages disrupt health services
The experts said the impact of the sanctions had developed into a broad humanitarian crisis threatening the rights to health, life, food and development. The accumulation of uncollected rubbish in some parts of Havana is also increasing the risk of disease.
Repeated power outages have disrupted health services. United Nations agencies have warned of food insecurity in Cuba, growing shortages of medicines and other essential goods, and a decline in the country’s capacity to provide cancer treatment.
Urgent appeal to UN bodies
The experts called on the international community and civil society organizations to act quickly to prevent a “silent Gaza” from emerging in Cuba.
Arguing that the US sanctions violate international law, the experts said the measures were part of a broader strategy aimed at changing Cuba’s political system.
The experts also called on the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly to address the issue urgently.
