Former Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said in an interview with Ksenia Sobchak, released on Oct. 20 on her YouTube channel, that he sees a new world war as likely and links it to Europe's rapid rearmament.
"I am neither stupid nor blind. If you don't see how Europe is arming, you are pretending not to see it. And why is it arming? For what?" Vučić said. "It's like in Chekhov's dramas: if a gun hangs on the wall in the first act, it will fire in the third."
Asked by Sobchak whether he believes a world war will break out, Vučić said it would be a miracle if it did not. "I would be the happiest man if I were wrong. But I'm afraid I'm not wrong," he added.
'Putin is not bluffing'
According to Vučić, Europe, while speaking of the need to defend itself against Russia, is "arming dramatically." He cited rising defense spending in Germany, singling out Rheinmetall, and in Scandinavian countries including Sweden. He also said Vladimir Putin is not bluffing when he warns of a possible nuclear response to a direct attack on Russia, though he believes Moscow would not be the first to use such weapons.
In August, Vučić said a third world war had probably already begun.
Running for prime minister
Vučić resigned as president on Sept. 27 amid prolonged protests to run for prime minister in snap parliamentary elections on Oct. 25. National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabić is serving as acting president.
