Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore have decided to act jointly to keep the Malacca and Singapore straits open and safe for international maritime trade.
The agreement was announced in a joint statement issued by the maritime authorities of the three countries after the 17th Cooperation Forum in Singapore. The statement was issued by the Malaysian Marine Department, Indonesia’s Directorate General of Sea Transportation and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.
The countries will continue their joint efforts to preserve freedom of navigation, openness and safety for international maritime traffic in the Malacca and Singapore straits.
Speaking at the forum, Singapore’s Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow said the straits were among the most important transportation routes for global trade. Siow said more than 100,000 vessels use these waterways every year and stated that efforts would continue to ensure international maritime traffic remains open and safe.
