Wildfires that intensified over the weekend in British Columbia, Canada, have forced more than 5,000 people to evacuate. Fueled by strong winds, the fires also forced the closure of some highways.
According to Okanagan Emergency Management, the fire that started Saturday at Quilpituk Creek has spread to 550 hectares. Evacuation orders have been issued for more than 2,000 properties in the area, while over 400 additional properties are under evacuation alert. The Caesars Landing area near Okanagan Lake has also been included in the evacuation order.
The BC Wildfire Service announced that the fire in the North Okanagan region grew from 10 square kilometers to 26 square kilometers over the weekend, more than doubling in size. In response, evacuation orders in the area were expanded.
Officials said the fire and weather conditions are being closely monitored, that current evacuation orders are not expected to be lifted soon, and that additional evacuation orders could be issued if necessary.
As of Sunday, authorities reported 31 new wildfires across the province in the previous 24 hours, nine of which were extinguished. The statement warned that lower temperatures, increased humidity and lighter winds were expected to reduce the fire's impact, but that drought-affected vegetation continues to pose a risk of new fires.
