Professor Erhan Afyoncu, rector of Türkiye’s National Defense University, made a statement about the shared historical roots of Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.
He said:
“Three brothers with one father and one mother: Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.”

“Throughout Turkic history, different tribes played prominent roles at different times and in different regions, founding their own states.”
“The Oghuz, who founded the largest states in Turkic history—the Seljuk, Ottoman, Safavid, Aq Qoyunlu, Qara Qoyunlu, Afsharid and Qajar states—as well as numerous beyliks in Anatolia, Azerbaijan, Iraq and Syria, now rule in the Republic of Türkiye, the Republic of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan as sons of one father. Nearly half of the 250-million-strong Turkic world consists of Oghuz Turks.”
The Oghuz branch of the Turkic world
Turkish, Azerbaijani and Turkmen belong to the Oghuz group of Turkic languages. Türkiye and Azerbaijan are members of the Organization of Turkic States, while Turkmenistan participates in its work as an observer.
