Heads of state who arrived in Ankara for the 13th summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) were offered a traditional Kyrgyz treat — boorsok.
The presentation took place on October 29 at the opening of the Turkic States Civilization Park in the Beştepe presidential complex. Women wearing red velvet robes and fur hats offered carved wooden trays of boorsok to the leaders as they toured the park in cars. After the presidents, including Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, their spouses also tried the treat. The video was filmed by Begimai Kubanychbekova.
A symbol of hospitality
Boorsok consists of small pieces of yeast dough fried in oil. It is called baursak in Kazakhstan and pishme in Turkmenistan. No celebration, wedding or reception for guests in Central Asia is complete without it. According to Kyrgyz belief, the aroma of boorsok frying in oil reaches the spirits of ancestors.
Kyrgyzstan in focus
