Ukrainian forces carried out a drone attack targeting Russian logistics and oil facilities in Crimea and the Krasnodar region. Following the attack, satellite imagery detected thick smoke rising from fuel depots near the Kerch Strait crossing.
Images obtained by Al Jazeera's open-source unit show smoke continuing to rise from fuel depots near the town of Chushka. This area is located near the Kerch crossing, a vital link between the Crimean peninsula and Russian territory.
Russian authorities announced a fire at an oil terminal in the area and suspended ferry services for an indefinite period. The operations center in the Krasnodar region stated that a drone attack on the "Panagiya" ferry in the Kerch Strait killed one person and injured another.
The statement noted that the attack also caused a fire at an oil terminal in Chushka and that fire and rescue teams were dispatched to the area. Krasnodar officials later suspended ferry traffic, advising truck drivers to use an alternative road route.
Fuel Sales Restricted in Crimea
Sergey Aksyonov, the Moscow-appointed head of the Crimean peninsula, halted fuel sales at petrol stations for individual and corporate customers starting at 09:00 local time. Aksyonov announced that supplies would be redirected only to state institutions, vital and security services.
Aksyonov called on the public to trust official sources and not to panic. In a later update, he stated that the death toll from attacks targeting the Kerch region had risen to 4, with the number of injured rising to 28.
Zelenskyy: Logistics and Military Facilities Struck
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian forces carried out long-range attacks targeting Russian logistics, military, and oil facilities on both sides of the Crimean Bridge.
Zelenskyy said the strikes hit maritime oil transport facilities in the Krasnodar region, a fuel depot in Kerch, and also four radar stations for 'S-400' systems and two 'Pantsir' systems. He stated these attacks were a response to Russia's attacks on Ukrainian civilians and praised the Ukrainian forces' ability to operate approximately 300 kilometers from the front line.
Video footage shared on local platforms also documented thick smoke continuing to rise from around the city of Kerch and the crossing following the attacks. Satellite imagery provides additional visual evidence that the attack targeted sensitive infrastructure related to fuel storage and maritime transport.
Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, the Crimean peninsula and surrounding areas of the Kerch Strait have become a frequent site of mutual attacks due to their strategic importance in connecting the peninsula to Russian territory and securing transport and supply lines.
