Russian hip-hop artist Navai Bakirov’s legal proceedings in Central Asia began when he was detained while crossing from Kyrgyzstan into Kazakhstan. Bakirov was detained at a border checkpoint on Tuesday and arrested in Kazakhstan on suspicion of drug trafficking.
Korday court orders two months in detention
The Korday District Court ordered 31-year-old Bakirov to remain in pretrial detention for two months. The decision came after the artist performed a concert on Monday in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

Bakirov allegedly admitted during police questioning that he had bought the drugs in Bishkek. Kazakh border guards allegedly found 2.5 grams of marijuana in the artist’s vehicle after a sniffer dog alerted them.
Astana concert canceled
Following the detention, Bakirov’s concert scheduled for Wednesday in Astana was canceled. His show in Chisinau, Moldova, was also postponed from this Friday to December 8.

Rose to fame with HammAli & Navai
Bakirov, who was born in Samara, became known across the former Soviet space as a member of the HammAli & Navai musical duo before pursuing a solo career.
The artist’s case in Central Asia began about a month after he resolved a separate civil dispute in Moscow. In May, Bakirov paid the city compensation for the damage caused by an accident involving his Ferrari in central Moscow.
