Novaya Gazeta Editor-in-Chief Sergei Sokolov was taken to the Investigative Committee for questioning after his apartment in Moscow was searched.
Contact with Sokolov was cut around midday Moscow time, shortly before he was due to chair an editorial planning meeting. A lawyer went to the Investigative Committee to assist Sokolov.
Criminal investigation continues
The search of the apartment was conducted as part of an ongoing criminal investigation launched in the spring that focuses on the alleged unlawful use of personal data.
Novaya Gazeta managing editor Oleg Roldugin was also charged in April in connection with the same allegation. Roldugin, an experienced journalist who investigated corruption allegations, denies the accusation that he obtained and published personal data through unlawful means.

The investigation also raised suspicions that Roldugin may have acted on Sokolov’s instructions or in coordination with him. However, the parties to the investigation have not presented this allegation to the public as an established finding.
The newspaper had ended its print edition
Novaya Gazeta halted its print edition because of stringent censorship laws introduced in Russia after the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, as part of the government’s broader pressure on the press. The newspaper continued publishing news and video content online.
The Committee to Protect Journalists called for Roldugin’s immediate release and an end to what it described as targeted prosecution against Novaya Gazeta.
