Voronezh Region Governor Alexander Gusev announced that air defense systems had intercepted 33 unmanned aerial vehicles and several jet-powered aerial targets during the night. Ukraine had announced that it targeted Russia’s Borisoglebsk military air base in the country’s southwest.
The Ukrainian Navy claimed that six Su-34M fighter jets were destroyed in the attack. Ukraine said its Neptune coastal missile system was used during the operation, and that some equipment supporting flight operations was damaged, a fire broke out and secondary explosions occurred.
Ukraine’s statement on the air base
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said four Su-34 aircraft were destroyed and two others were hit in the attack on the air base in the Voronezh region. Zelenskyy claimed that the aircraft were used in attacks on Ukrainian positions and residential areas, and that some had been loaded with bombs in preparation for new operations.

Zelenskyy also said that a facility used to store and launch attack drones during long-range operations had been targeted in the Oryol region, and that a target had been hit in the Black Sea. The Ukrainian leader argued that Russia was prolonging the war and said long-range operations would continue.
Moscow has not confirmed the air base attack
Russian officials did not confirm that the Borisoglebsk air base had been targeted. Governor Gusev said falling debris damaged outbuildings belonging to several private homes and a vehicle in the city of Voronezh.
Residents of Borisoglebsk said they heard explosions and that a large fire visible from various parts of the city had broken out. However, the fire’s direct connection to the attack on the air base was not confirmed.
The Borisoglebsk military air base is located about 6 kilometers east of the city center. Satellite imagery was claimed to show damage in the area where aircraft were parked; the information that six fighter jets had been destroyed was not independently verified.

Attacks involving Su-34 aircraft
Russia uses Su-34 fighter jets to launch guided glide bombs at Ukrainian positions and residential areas. The Su-34M is known as an upgraded model in this aircraft family.
The Ukrainian military announced in September that it had destroyed a Russian MiG-29 fighter jet near the Millerovo air base in the Rostov region. The same statement said that a Ka-27 helicopter had also been destroyed near the Yeysk air base in the Krasnodar region.
Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces had previously announced that two Su-57s, one Su-34 and another Sukhoi aircraft whose model could not be identified had been targeted at the Shagol air base in the Chelyabinsk region. The targets at Shagol were said to be approximately 1,700 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
