A rally held by US Vice President JD Vance in Hendersonville, North Carolina, on Oct. 19 was interrupted when a man sitting behind the podium stood up and demanded the release of the Epstein files. The event was held in support of Republican congressional candidate Jennifer Balkcom ahead of the midterm elections.
Security removed the man from the venue amid chants of "USA." Vance returned to his earlier claim about the border: "Ladies and gentlemen, I have to amend something I said earlier. I said that we have had zero illegal border crossings in the United States of America. But one isn't bad, right?" In doing so, the vice president signaled that he regarded the protester as an illegal immigrant.
Critics react
"It's insulting to suggest only 'illegal immigrants' care about justice for victims and accountability for perpetrators. Most American citizens do too!" California Gov. Gavin Newsom's press office responded. Some critics said Vance assumed the man was an immigrant because of his appearance.
Financier Jeffrey Epstein died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. With the Nov. 3 midterm elections two weeks away, demands to release the files from his case remain at the center of political debate in the US.
