Moldovan Prime Minister Vasiliy Tofan announced he will hold an emergency government meeting on July 28 in response to disruptions in the country’s energy markets and a diesel fuel shortage.
In a social media post, Prime Minister Tofan said: “I am closely following what is happening in the Republic of Moldova’s energy sector, particularly in the diesel and gas markets. In light of recent developments, I have decided to hold a government meeting tomorrow morning to ensure that all mechanisms are in place at the executive level for swift intervention when necessary.”
Global Causes of the Crisis
The Moldovan government announced on Monday that some fuel stations experienced temporary diesel shortages and that additional fuel shipments were being arranged to address the situation. The official statement cited a drop in the Danube’s water level and the escalating conflicts in the Middle East, which have disrupted supply chains and negatively affected fuel deliveries, as the main reasons for the diesel shortage.
Farmers Under Strain
The “Farmers’ Power” association reported that agricultural producers are struggling to find diesel fuel in the middle of the harvest season. The association noted that some fuel companies have been unable to source diesel for 5-7 days and cannot provide clear information on when fuel will arrive.
