An important step is being taken towards Russia's domestic development in biotechnology. Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) is developing a cell-free protein synthesis platform expected to revolutionize drug and industrial enzyme development processes.
According to the university's press service, the new platform will significantly accelerate the development of new protein molecules by enabling the production of biologically active substances under controlled conditions.
The platform will dramatically accelerate the development and experimental validation of new protein molecules for drugs, diagnostic tools and industrial enzymes. The technology reduces the time from computer-aided design of a molecule to laboratory testing from several weeks to several days.
Traditional protein synthesis methods require growing a microorganism with the desired gene, which takes a long time. The cell-free synthesis platform developed by FEFU aims to shorten this process from computer design to laboratory testing from several weeks to several days.
An interdisciplinary team of genetic engineers, biophysicists, bioinformaticians, biotechnologists and engineers is working on the project. The platform is designed for the creation and preliminary testing of protein molecules for various areas of the bioeconomy, such as industrial and food biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, agriculture and cosmetology.
University officials stated that the developed technology could be used not only for research within FEFU, but also by institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences and industrial partners to quickly test scientific hypotheses, select promising protein molecules and develop products with specific properties.
