A mass brawl broke out in Armenia’s National Assembly on October 29 between lawmakers from the ruling Civil Contract party and the opposition Strong Armenia faction.
Verbal exchange escalates into scuffle
The conflict began during a speech by Civil Contract lawmaker Taron Chakhoyan, who was discussing Strong Armenia’s election campaign. A verbal exchange broke out between him and Narek Karapetyan, head of the Strong Armenia faction, before escalating into a fight joined by other lawmakers.
RIA Novosti reported that Deputy Speaker Vaagn Aleksanyan threw a bottle and a chair at his opponents. The scuffle continued in the parliament corridor.
Session suspended
Parliament Speaker Ruben Rubinyan suspended the session and called a recess, while security personnel were summoned to the chamber to maintain order. The session’s broadcast continued.
This is not the first such incident in the Armenian parliament; clashes between lawmakers from the ruling party and the opposition have occurred before.
