Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed Vladimir Putin, the United States’ position and mediation in negotiations to end the war in an interview with the British newspaper The Sun.
Asked about the Russian president’s mental state, Zelensky said: “I don’t know what is wrong with him. He is absolutely crazy, halfway or 10%. I hope he understands what he is doing.”
“The United States cannot side with an aggressor”
Zelensky said that the United States cannot side with Putin. “The United States and its president cannot side with an aggressor, regardless of which country is involved, simply because they are leaders of democracy,” he said.
He also discussed Donald Trump’s relationship with Putin: “Publicly, he demonstrates good relations with Putin. I think that if he demonstrates excellent relations with Putin, Putin sees this in the media and, of course, responds that everything is fine. That means there is no pressure, no strong signals from the United States.”
Zelensky said Ukraine does not often hear Washington condemn the aggression. “And we need that,” he added.
On mediation
Speaking about mediation, Zelensky stressed: “With all due respect to mediation, to be a mediator, you need to take a position in the middle, but you should not be in the middle in your attitude toward this war, because it is clear who the aggressor is. It is important not to change your position because of mediation.” Zelensky did not specify which country he meant.
“The United Kingdom will not be friends with Russia”
Asked whether the United Kingdom could trust Russia, Zelensky said that if it could not, London “100%” needs to expand its military-industrial capacity and restore much of what the country had in the past. He said Kyiv was ready to share its experience.
“Air defense is weak throughout Europe, not only in the United Kingdom. Geographically, you did not need such powerful defenses because nature itself protected your maritime borders. But now there is a new period, a new life, a new century, and we cannot trust Russia. The United Kingdom will not be friends with Russia in the coming years,” he said.
Interview background
Excerpts from the interview with The Sun have been published since October 28. Zelensky then said that he and Trump both wanted to end the war but differed over how to achieve that. On the same day, he said that during peace talks, the United States had proposed creating a buffer or demilitarized zone on both sides of the line of contact in Donbas.
New excerpts from the interview appeared on the day of Zelensky’s visit to Istanbul, where he held talks with Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
