Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Istanbul on 31 October at the invitation of Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Türkiye’s National Defence Minister Yaşar Güler welcomed the Ukrainian leader at the airport.
Zelensky said he had arrived in Istanbul with his team and would hold important talks with Erdoğan. He said Kyiv was working to strengthen the protection of its citizens, while important issues concerning maritime navigation in the Black Sea were also on the agenda.
During the visit, Zelensky is also expected to meet with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
Security in the Black Sea
Burhanettin Duran, head of the Communications Directorate of the Presidency of Türkiye, previously announced that the sides would discuss bilateral cooperation, the Russian-Ukrainian war and the security situation in the Black Sea.
In recent months, Russia and Ukraine have increased their attacks on vessels in the Black Sea, with vessels flying the Turkish flag also affected. In August, Ankara called for a moratorium on attacks against civilian vessels.
Türkiye as a mediator
In 2022, Türkiye became one of the initiators of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, and in 2025 it hosted three rounds of direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul.
