Azerbaijan welcomed Türkiye’s nomination of OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioğlu for the post of UN secretary-general.
“We welcome the initiative of the Republic of Türkiye to nominate Ambassador Feridun Sinirlioğlu, who currently serves as OSCE secretary-general, for the post of UN secretary-general,” Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aykhan Hajizada said in response to a media inquiry.

The importance of consensus
Hajizada underscored the importance of a selection process based on the candidates’ professional qualities, international and diplomatic experience, impartiality and ability to build consensus among member states, as well as on the principles and purposes of the UN Charter.
“We believe that the ongoing consultations and constructive dialogue among member states will result in an appropriate decision that will strengthen the UN’s ability to respond more effectively to today’s global challenges,” he added.
Nomination on October 30
Türkiye officially nominated Sinirlioğlu on October 30 after another informal vote in the UN Security Council once again failed to produce a consensus candidate. António Guterres’s term expires on December 31, 2026.
