Air Tanzania temporarily suspended flights between Tanzania’s capital and Moscow after Ukraine warned that Russian airspace had become dangerous for flights because of nighttime drone attacks.
The airline said the decision followed a routine risk assessment of operating conditions along the route. Air Tanzania said safety assessments had been given priority over commercial considerations.
Moscow route suspended after two months
The suspension came about two months after Air Tanzania launched direct flights to Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport. The airline announced that affected passengers would be offered either a full refund or free rebooking.
Air Tanzania later announced that flights to and from Moscow would resume next Monday. However, Vnukovo Airport’s website continued to list one arrival and one departure by the airline for Saturday.
Russia issues statement on air travel
Russia’s Transport Ministry said that, following Ukraine’s warning about its airspace, civil aviation authorities were coordinating with the military to prevent major disruptions to domestic flights.
Vladimir Putin described Ukraine’s statement as an “act of state terrorism” aimed at disrupting possible peace talks. Putin said the talks had effectively stalled.
Pegasus Airlines also announced on Wednesday that it had canceled some flights to Russia for technical and operational reasons, but provided no details about the decision.
