Mass production of more than 5,000 medium- and long-range attack unmanned aerial vehicles has begun in Germany as part of military aid to Ukraine.
The first production line is operating near Munich. The order was placed by the German government, while industry sources estimate the contract's value at around 300 million euros.
The joint venture, established in February, plans to complete the contract by mid-2027. The venture said it expects new orders and long-term production agreements in later stages.
The UAVs are being produced in two models
Two different unmanned aerial vehicle models are being developed under the program. One is designed for medium-range flights, while the other has a range of up to 1,500 kilometers.
Production is continuing at an undisclosed facility near Munich. A second facility planned for eastern Germany is also expected to be incorporated into the production process.
Partners divide software and hardware responsibilities
Auterion is providing the vehicles' software and operating system. Its Ukrainian partner, Airlogix, is responsible for manufacturing the unmanned aerial vehicles' hardware.
The vehicles are designed for one-way missions and carry explosives. Rather than returning after reaching their targets, they are developed to strike and destroy them. The design aims to enable artificial intelligence to maintain the route despite attempts by electronic warfare systems to jam signals.
Auterion Chief Executive Officer Lorenz Meier said a production line had been established in Germany capable of manufacturing cost-effective precision weapons in large quantities. Meier said systems that had previously been tested would be delivered this year and added that accelerating production would make it possible to build large stocks for deterrence purposes.
