Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, speaking about air defense operations in the Moscow region, said that 8,670 drones headed toward the region between 8:30 a.m. on August 1 and 8:30 a.m. on September 1.
Sobyanin said air defense systems intercepted most of the drones before they reached the outskirts of Russia's capital. The mayor announced that 795 drones approaching Moscow had been destroyed.
Air defenses around Moscow
Sobyanin did not provide information on how many drones reached the capital after breaching the air defense layers. No figures were released for deaths or damage caused by falling debris.
In his post, Sobyanin used an animated graphic showing with lines the movement of drones advancing toward Moscow along the Russian-Ukrainian border.
Attacks in August
On August 18, Moscow faced one of the heaviest drone attacks since the war began in 2022. Sobyanin had announced that approximately 650 drones were sent toward the city that night.
Debate over Russian airspace
Sobyanin's statement came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned airlines and insurance companies. Zelenskyy argued that Ukrainian drones had effectively closed Russian airspace.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kyiv had submitted its notification that Russian airspace was unsafe for commercial flights to the International Civil Aviation Organization. Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin also announced that civil aviation authorities were working with the military to prevent major disruptions to domestic flights.
