Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed steps to strengthen his country’s air defense capabilities during a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Zelenskyy said they expected Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets to be delivered to Ukraine soon.
Zelenskyy said the Gripen jets would complement the F-16s in the Ukrainian military. The aircraft are planned to be used particularly to intercept jet-powered Shahed unmanned aerial vehicles.

Swedish support and Europe’s pressure on Russia
The meeting addressed Ukraine’s defense needs in response to Russia’s ongoing attacks, as well as ways to increase its defense capabilities, particularly its air defense.
The Ukrainian president thanked Kristersson, expressing appreciation for Sweden’s agreement concerning the Gripen aircraft and its commitment to continuing support for Ukraine. Zelenskyy also said Europe should increase its support for Ukraine and strengthen pressure on Russia.
The two leaders also discussed Ukraine’s prospects for membership in the European Union and support for the energy sector ahead of winter. Zelenskyy thanked the Swedish people and government for their support for Ukraine and their joint efforts in the area of European security.

Energy infrastructure and civil defense with Finland
During Zelenskyy’s meeting with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, protecting civilian infrastructure from attacks and strengthening Ukraine’s air defense system were central issues.
Zelenskyy said energy facilities had been attacked again during the night of October 16 and throughout the day. He said power outages continued in part of the Volyn region and in some areas of Kyiv following the attacks.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine needed air defense equipment to intercept missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles and to protect people’s lives and critical infrastructure facilities. He added that new decisions on support for Ukraine were expected to be made this month as part of talks with Finland.
The development of a network of protected shelters for civilians was also discussed. Zelenskyy said the work of the Shelters Coalition established by Ukraine and Finland needed to be accelerated, and called for suitable shelters to be available in every city and settlement in Ukraine.
