Regional Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko said 42 drones had been shot down overnight in Russia's Leningrad region and that a fire in an industrial area in the city of Kirishi had been extinguished.
The fire broke out in the industrial area housing the Kinef oil refinery after a drone attack. In a statement on Sunday, Drozdenko said efforts to determine the consequences of the attack and assess the extent of the damage were continuing.
Russia's second-largest refinery
Kinef, located in Kirishi, is described as Russia's second-largest refinery by oil-processing capacity. The facility can process 20 million tonnes of oil annually, equivalent to approximately 7 percent of Russia's total oil-processing capacity.
The refinery's operations were temporarily suspended in early May after a fire broke out following a drone attack.
The Russia-Ukraine war
Russia's military operation against Ukraine has continued since February 24, 2022. Moscow says Kyiv must abandon joining the military formations of Western countries for the operation to end. Kyiv views this approach as interference in its internal affairs.
