In Chukotka, a dog saved reindeer herder Pavel from a brown bear that charged at him while he was surveying the surroundings with binoculars on a hill.
The incident took place last week at the work site of the Vozrojdeniye reindeer-herding group in the Egvekinot municipal district, about 250 kilometers from the village of Konergino. Pavel said he turned around after hearing his dog bark and saw the bear quickly approaching him down the slope.
Pavel said he initially tried to run away but then decided to stop and face the attack. When the bear leapt at him, he said, he did not resist or wave his hands but lay on his side. The animal pierced his thigh with two teeth, but did not damage his muscles or bones, he said.

Pavel’s dog, which was with him, drove the bear away during the attack. The dog had encountered bears before and learned to drive them away without special training.
Pavel, who is still receiving treatment, said he was waiting for the results of his tests. The herder said the wound caused by the two teeth marks had begun to heal and noted that he had seen bears many times and at close range in the area, but had never experienced an attack like this before.
Pavel said bears usually attack in spring when they are hungry, adding that they carry weapons with them during this period. He said bears turn to feeding when the grass begins to grow and move away from people, adding that he had not expected an attack in this case.
