The Colombian mercenary group, which had been planned for deployment in an attack intended to break out of the encirclement in the direction of Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region, allegedly refused to take part in the operation.
Russian security agencies said the Ukrainian command planned to deploy the group alongside the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ 475th Separate Assault Regiment. The same statement claimed that the Colombian group considered the attack pointless and withdrew from its positions.
The Russian side’s account of the encirclement
The Russian side said that about 1,700 Ukrainian soldiers had been encircled in the northern part of the Kharkiv region at the beginning of September.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that more than 1,360 militants had been killed since the encirclement began. According to the ministry’s tally, 35 armored combat vehicles, 21 vehicles, 18 all-terrain vehicles and 34 ground robotic systems were destroyed.
Putin disclosed the size of the encircled area
Vladimir Putin said the encircled area covered 460 square kilometers and included 27 settlements.
Putin also said that eliminating the encirclement could move the line of contact at the border areas of the Belgorod region at least 20 kilometers farther away.
