The unarmed Turkey-flagged bulk carrier MV Reyhan Sarı was allegedly attacked by Ukrainian drones off Novorossiysk on July 21 while carrying coal from Russia’s Port of Taman to Trabzon.
The alleged attack killed 54-year-old Turkish seafarer Savaş Çakar, who was working in the ship’s engine room, and injured two crew members.
Abbas Çakar, Savaş Çakar’s brother, called for those he holds responsible for his brother’s death to be held accountable. He also announced that he would pursue international legal remedies against those responsible and emphasized that his brother worked at sea to support his two children.
A reply purportedly sent from the official email address of Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, contained the following words:
"Your brother consciously chose this path. He contributed to the enrichment of the Russian Federation and got what he deserved."
