Türkiye congratulated Azerbaijan on the 35th anniversary of the restoration of its state independence. “Happy 35th anniversary of the restoration of the independence of brotherly Azerbaijan!” the Turkish Foreign Ministry wrote on Oct. 18.
The ministry shared the greeting with a festive graphic showing the Azerbaijani flag and Baku’s Flame Towers, with text in both Turkish and Azerbaijani.

Praise for the leaders’ brotherhood
Ömer Çelik, spokesman for the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, said Türkiye salutes Azerbaijan “with the motto ‘two states, one nation.’” He described the brotherhood between Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ilham Aliyev as a symbol of the eternal friendship between the two peoples.
From the Soviet collapse to an alliance
Azerbaijan restored its independence on Oct. 18, 1991, when the republic’s Supreme Soviet adopted the Constitutional Act on State Independence. On Nov. 9 that year, Türkiye became the first country to recognize the new state.
Since 2021, Azerbaijan has had two independence holidays: Oct. 18 as the Day of Restoration of Independence and May 28 as Independence Day, marking the founding of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918. Also in 2021, Erdoğan and Aliyev signed the Shusha Declaration on allied relations.
