Türkiye’s Embassy in Azerbaijan said in a statement on Oct. 17 that an article titled “Behind the scenes of Hakan Fidan’s meeting at GYF,” published the same day by several Azerbaijani media outlets, particularly Qafqazinfo, was “entirely based on baseless slander.”
The article claimed that during his visit to Baku the foreign minister went to a foundation set up by Turkish philanthropists, held a secret meeting there and gave various instructions. According to the embassy, the report “is nothing more than a disinformation effort by circles seeking to damage relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan.”
“Courtesy photos, not secret meetings”
The statement stressed that during his visit to Baku the minister had his photo taken out of courtesy with many people, including members of an organization with legal status in Azerbaijan. “Claims in the report that our minister held a secret meeting and gave various instructions are absolutely untrue,” it said.

The embassy also said the article made slanderous claims unrelated to reality based on a letter allegedly written to the Turkish parliament, adding: “No such letter exists.”
“Deliberate lies”
Describing expressions in the article such as “plans to interfere in internal affairs,” “intelligence operations,” “coup and chaos plans” and “training agents of influence” as “deliberate lies aimed at turning the brotherly Azerbaijani people against Türkiye,” the embassy urged the public in both countries not to give credence to “such vile slander” and manipulative claims.
Bahçeli: “We are two sons of one mother”
On the same day, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli said in a message marking the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan’s independence on Oct. 18: “Azerbaijan and Türkiye, whatever the issue, are an inseparable whole. We are two sons of one mother of the same lineage.” He said the two countries had stood together against all difficulties under the principle of “one nation, two states” and that “there will be no turning back from this.”
Fidan was in Baku for the 7th summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), where he met President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov. The visit came as restrictions on headscarves in Azerbaijani schools were being debated in Türkiye. Fidan said at the time that the two countries may sometimes take different approaches, but these should not erode their strategic relationship.
