In Slovenia, the government tasked the relevant authorities with examining the situation of 93 Russian nationals who obtained Slovenian citizenship through a simplified naturalization procedure after 2015.
Russian Embassy comments on the decision
The Russian Embassy in Slovenia described the review of the conditions for acquiring citizenship as Ljubljana’s internal affair. However, the diplomatic mission said the decision to include only Russian nationals, rather than all foreigners, raised questions.
In a statement issued on September 15, the embassy said it had taken note of the Slovenian government’s initiative to review the conditions under which the 93 Russian nationals obtained citizenship. The statement added that the conditions for revoking their citizenship were also being examined.
Review linked to the atmosphere in Europe
The embassy linked Ljubljana’s decision to what it described as anti-Russian sentiment and espionage concerns that had influenced Europe after 2022. The diplomatic statement argued that this trend was continuing and that Slovenia had not remained outside this atmosphere.
