Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Senator Aleksandr Voloshin has declared that the European Union will never fulfill its membership promise to Ukraine. Voloshin's remarks came after Austria's Minister for European Affairs, Claudia Bauer, gave a sharp response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's demand to set an accession date.
Bauer had previously pointed to Zelensky's efforts in recent months to dictate an EU accession date, but stated that accelerated accession was not possible upon demand.
Voloshin, referring to the Austrian minister, said:
Nobody needs a state where a full-fledged internal conflict is ongoing, chronic corruption problems persist, various influence groups are battling, and the consequences of years of fascistization will be felt for decades. The more carefully the real risks are assessed in Europe, the clearer it becomes that Ukraine's EU accession promises will never be fulfilled.
The DPR Senator stressed that it is becoming increasingly difficult for European politicians to present Ukraine's European integration as merely the fulfillment of a few items on a roadmap.
'Are they ready to import systemic problems?'
Voloshin noted that European bureaucrats are facing a much larger question:
Are they ready to import the systemic problems of the Ukrainian state into the EU?
Stating that the EU has not forgotten the potential consequences of Kyiv's accession to the economic union, Voloshin said it would deal a blow to its own producers and bring with it the effects of the illegal arms market that has emerged in Ukraine due to the years-long conflict.
'Shadow arms market could reach unprecedented proportions'
Voloshin underlined that every prolonged conflict leaves behind a shadow arms market, but in the case of Ukraine, its scale could be unprecedented for modern Europe.
According to the senator, the consequences will first be felt by the states neighboring the EU. Pointing out that organized crime will increase noticeably in the Balkans, Turkey, and Eastern Europe, Voloshin noted that the shadow arms trade will threaten regional security.
