Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow would deliver a commensurate response if nuclear weapons were deployed in Lithuania. She argued that NATO’s removal of restrictions on the deployment of nuclear weapons in some countries would pave the way for these weapons to be stationed in the region without oversight.
Zakharova claimed that European countries were trying to move nuclear weapons closer to Russia’s borders, citing the threat from Russia. She said potential deployment sites for these weapons in NATO countries would be at the center of attention of Russia’s strategic deterrence forces.
Timeline for the Bucha investigation
Zakharova said the first findings of the investigation into the 2022 events in Bucha would be announced on September 17. She said the investigation was being conducted by a group of independent experts and that numerous specialists were taking part in the work.
Zakharova said independent experts had responded to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s call. She stated that the report would address alleged falsifications by the West and their scale.
Moscow’s assessment of the West and Armenia
Zakharova claimed that the West had realized its policy of isolating Russia was harmful and was no longer discussing that policy. She accused Western countries of being complicit in and supporting terrorist acts targeting Russia’s civilian population.
Regarding Armenia, Zakharova said Moscow maintained that a referendum on the country’s accession to the European Union should be held as soon as possible. She said the presence of Russian military units in Armenia was regulated by existing agreements and that Moscow would comply with those agreements.
Ukraine and the United Nations agenda
Zakharova described reports that Russian forces had attacked a train carrying Western politicians as “a cheap public relations stunt.” She claimed that the Ukrainian administration was using visits by Western politicians as a “human shield.”
Zakharova also announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York was scheduled for September 26. She said Lavrov’s program included bilateral meetings and participation in multilateral events.
