U.S. President Donald Trump shared his view that Ireland would eventually be united with reporters before his bilateral meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin in Dublin. Trump said Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would eventually unite.
Trump said he wanted to see the two sides unite and that it would be positive if this happened. Saying he had friends on both sides in Ireland, Trump said the unification would take place in the future.
U.S.-Ireland relations and the golf tournament in Dublin
Michael Martin said relations between the United States and Ireland were strong and based on a long history. Martin said investments by the Trump family in Doonbeg, Ireland, provided employment for 350 people.
Martin said Trump had come to the country to attend the Irish Open golf tournament and added that many people of Irish descent lived in the United States. Trump described the tournament as one of the most important events in the world and said relations between the United States and Ireland were at their best level in history.
Trump comments on Iran and Gaza
Responding to a question about when the war with Iran would end, Trump said he thought it would be over soon. Trump claimed that Iran was only a few weeks away from possessing a nuclear weapon and said this could pose a major threat to Israel and the Middle East.
Trump also responded to accusations that he supported the genocide in Gaza and Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, saying they had ended the conflict in Gaza and rescued all the hostages.
Falkland Islands dispute and trade with Canada
Speaking about the dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, which had resurfaced, Trump said the United Kingdom had been a different country in the past. Trump said the United Kingdom had taken the islands back but expressed uncertainty about whether the country could do the same today.
Trump argued that the United Kingdom was facing problems in the areas of migration and energy and said it had numerous issues that made it difficult to focus on the islands. Drawing attention to the islands’ distance and the fact that a sea journey could take weeks, Trump described a possible attempt as a potential disaster.
Trump also announced that a trade agreement between Canada and the United States would be signed shortly. Saying that Canada wanted the agreement, Trump noted that Ottawa needed to treat American farmers well.
