Thirteen people were killed on Friday evening in a crash involving a minibus, a logging truck and a car on the M-8 highway in the Arkhangelsk region. Four children were among those killed.
Maria Lvova-Belova, the Children’s Rights Commissioner under the President of Russia, said the children were aged 6, 11, 15 and 16. An injured boy is receiving treatment in hospital and is not in life-threatening condition.
The regional Health Ministry announced that eight injured people, including three children, were taken to hospitals. The crash occurred near Arkhangelsk.
Russia’s Interior Ministry said the minibus may have crossed into the oncoming lane while overtaking improperly and collided with the logging truck. The prosecutor’s office is examining the conditions on the road where the crash occurred.
The Investigative Committee opened two criminal investigations into the incident. Psychologists from the Emergency Situations Ministry provided support to the families of those killed and injured.
A day of mourning was declared in the Arkhangelsk region on Saturday. Lvova-Belova said she was in contact with Elena Molchanova, the region’s children’s rights ombudsman.
