NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he does not take seriously Russia’s threats to use nuclear weapons if the alliance tries to isolate the Kaliningrad region. Asked at the Euronews Defence & Space Summit in Brussels on Sept. 30 whether there was a risk of nuclear use, he answered: “No.”

“Everybody knows that he can never win against NATO. I don’t take this seriously,” Rutte said of Vladimir Putin. “We are a defensive alliance. Stop the nuclear threat. This is absolutely not called for and not helpful,” he added, pledging to “defend every inch of NATO territory.”

Russian diplomatic missions in Belgium, the UK and Ireland had said Moscow was ready to use its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons, if NATO countries tried to isolate Kaliningrad, a position confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
