Work to commission the first unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, at the center of Türkiye’s nuclear energy cooperation with Russia, was the main topic of a meeting in Ankara.
Türkiye’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar received Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev at the ministry building on Thursday. The meeting covered the plant’s latest status, the commissioning process for the first unit and work under way on the other three reactors.

Türkiye’s nuclear capacity target
Bayraktar said Akkuyu marked the beginning of Türkiye’s 70-year nuclear energy goal becoming a reality. The minister said these efforts would be expanded through the new plants planned for Sinop and Thrace, as well as small modular reactors.

Türkiye aims to increase its nuclear energy capacity to 20,000 megawatts by 2050.
Operating plan for Akkuyu
Akkuyu Nuclear JSC Chairman Anton Duduchenko previously said that the plant’s first reactor would be commissioned in 2026.

The first phase of Türkiye’s first nuclear power plant, Akkuyu, began in April 2023. Under an agreement signed between Türkiye and Russia in 2010, all four units of the plant are planned to be commissioned by 2028.
