A planned terrorist attack on a critical industrial facility in the Ural Federal District of Russia was thwarted at the last moment. The Russian Investigative Committee (SK) released details of the operation to the public.
According to the statement, a 60-year-old individual born in the Ukrainian SSR and residing in the city of Tyumen contacted a representative of the Ukrainian special services via Telegram. On the instructions of this representative, he began preparations for an attack on a major industrial facility.
The suspect scouted the railway lines near the target facility, examining security measures and train schedules. After identifying the most suitable points for placing explosives, he procured materials in accordance with the instructions he received.
After preparing an improvised explosive device (IED), the suspect hid it in a secret compartment of an abandoned building on the night of July 19. The SK announced that a criminal case has been opened against the suspect on charges of preparing a terrorist act, trafficking in firearms and ammunition, trafficking in explosives, and attempting to take the life of a law enforcement officer.
Searches at the suspect's residence yielded firearms, components that could be used to build another IED, and mobile phones. Ballistic, genetic, and forensic medical examinations have been initiated on the seized explosive device.
