Preparing for possible Russia-related threats, Lithuania has drawn up evacuation plans covering different scenarios. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius said the country would not surrender and would respond if it were attacked.
The plans provide for the orderly evacuation of elderly people from cities, while also aiming to prevent major traffic congestion during an evacuation. Sinkevicius said the preparations were based on various scenarios.
Lithuanians feel threatened because of Russia
Sinkevicius said people in Lithuania constantly feel threatened because of Russia. The prime minister cited the entry of unmanned aerial vehicles into Lithuania’s airspace as one of the reasons for this concern.
Recalling that Lithuania is a NATO member, Sinkevicius stressed that the country shares a land border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region. He said the threats did not occur every day but were concrete and real.

Call for a change in Britain’s defense mindset
The prime minister said Britain needed to change its mindset on defense. He acknowledged that Lithuania was in a position closer to the border and the threat.
The remarks came about a week after NATO fighter jets shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle that entered Lithuania’s airspace. While the vehicle’s origin was not officially confirmed, Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas said it had come from the direction of Belarus, Russia’s close ally.
