Sergey Lavrov sharply criticized Germany’s measures against Russia, saying that these steps marked “the start of a real war.”
Lavrov said Germany had taken measures last week, citing the discovery of a UAV at Leipzig-Halle Airport. He said the measures included plans to close Russia’s Consulate General in Bonn and terminate the contract for the Russian House in Berlin.
Lavrov argued that although it was reported that the UAV belonged to Russia, the facts of the incident had not been investigated. He claimed that Germany had failed to learn from the past and wanted another war. He also said that Germany had closed diplomatic missions before World War II.
Different assessments of the UAV at the airport
On August 4, a UAV believed to contain an explosive device was found at Leipzig-Halle Airport near a Ukrainian transport aircraft.
U.S. intelligence claimed that the UAV, which was said to be carrying explosives, had characteristics specific to Russian military intelligence. The German government announced on September 1 that the investigation’s findings pointed to Russia as responsible.
Berlin’s measures against Russia
Under the decisions announced by Germany, Russia’s Consulate General in Bonn was scheduled to close as of September 18. The measures also included terminating the contract for the Russian House in Berlin, tightening entry controls for Russian citizens and increasing pressure on what Germany described as Russia’s “shadow fleet.”
