A scientist working at an institute affiliated with Roscosmos, the heart of Russia's space research, has been arrested on treason charges. Moscow's Meshchansky District Court ordered the two-month detention of 35-year-old aerodynamics specialist Maxim Kravchuk.
Kravchuk worked at the Central Research Institute of Machine Building (TsNIIMash), part of the state space agency Roscosmos. According to Russian media, the scientist was detained on June 24.
Because treason investigations in Russia are conducted in secret and trials are held behind closed doors, the specific charges against Kravchuk have not been made public. However, the news site Ostorozhno Novosti reported that Kravchuk traveled to Ukraine and Moldova twice each between 2016 and 2019.
Kravchuk's lawyers appealed the detention order on June 29. The appeal hearing is scheduled for July 29.
This case marks at least the fourth scientist at TsNIIMash to face treason charges since 2019. According to data from the exiled news outlet Agentstvo, he is at least the seventh Russian scientist to face criminal prosecution since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
