Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with sailors in St. Petersburg on the occasion of Navy Day, made striking claims about the history of Donbas. Putin said he had read archive documents showing that Donbas representatives had requested the region be included in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.
However, Putin claimed that this decision was later changed. The Russian leader alleged that Bolsheviks from regions further west persuaded Vladimir Lenin to hand Donbas over to the 'emerging Ukraine.'
"When Donbas representatives asked, 'How can this be? We had agreed that Donbas would be together with Mother Russia,' Vladimir Ilyich replied, 'The decision must be changed.' And so they changed it."
Putin concluded: "Now Russian soldiers must set things back on their historical course."
