Russia's capital Moscow is set to face a final heat wave and thunderstorms this week. In a statement to RIA Novosti, Yevgeny Tishkovets, a leading expert at the Fobos weather center, said temperatures will soar to 30°C with brief thunderstorms throughout the week.
Tishkovets remarked, "Although August is a month of weather contrasts, summer will refuse to give up its position and even launch a counteroffensive. This week, even the shadows won't help, and residents of Central Russia can expect the final August heat."
First days of the week
According to the expert, the weather early in the week will be within summer norms. Monday's high will range from 24 to 27°C. On Tuesday, sunny and warm weather will prevail in Moscow and the central belt regions, with no precipitation expected. Temperatures will climb to 25-28°C.
On Wednesday, the chance of rain remains low, and temperatures will rise another degree. Morning temperatures of 14-17°C will cause 'milky white' fogs, especially in low-lying areas around Moscow and near water bodies. By afternoon, thermometers will read 26-29°C.
Rain and heat by week's end
On Thursday, an atmospheric front entering the region will trigger brief thundershowers. Oppressive heat is expected during the day: 23-31°C. Tishkovets said the rain and heat will continue on Friday.
The expert noted that toward Friday evening, scattered cumulonimbus clouds reaching heights of 11-12 kilometers will form and turn into thunderstorms. Rainfall of 7-12 liters per square meter is expected. Nighttime temperatures will be 18-21°C, and during the day, when the sun is directly overhead, thermometers will again push toward 30°C. Tishkovets concluded, 'This will be a farewell heat wave.'
