Minors make up 85% of the more than 5,000 people detained over the high school blockades across France since Sept. 28, and most of them are high school students themselves, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said. On Friday, Oct. 2, alone, 1,747 people were taken into custody.

Student organizations say the government’s proposals fall short and have vowed to keep going. Ryad Rani, president of the high school union USL, urged students to join the movement’s “third act” on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Education Minister Édouard Geffray reported that 24 schools were “burned or ransacked” nationwide.
