Speaking during the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly, Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan accused Russia of repeatedly violating his country’s airspace with drones. Tofan described the situation as unacceptable.
Tofan said similar incidents must not become normalized over time, adding, "We must not get used to this. Repetition does not make a violation acceptable."
Moldova’s stance on the war in Ukraine
Tofan said Moldova could not choose whether the war in its neighboring country would begin, but could decide how to respond to it. He said Moldova had welcomed people fleeing the war and kept its transport routes open.
Tofan said Moldova had reduced railway transit fees for Ukraine’s grain shipments, noting that such decisions were not always cost-free or politically easy at home.
European Union membership process
Tofan said Moldova was continuing its accession negotiations with the European Union and recalled that the country had received EU candidate status in 2022.
Tofan said EU membership did not mean replacing one sphere of influence with another. He said Moldovan citizens had chosen democracy, prosperity and peace.
The Moldovan prime minister also said his country’s European orientation was advancing alongside its partnership with the United States, particularly in the areas of security, energy independence and resilience.
