Military units are joining firefighters and forestry crews in efforts to extinguish wildfires in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bulgaria.
Response underway in two areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Firefighters are working to contain a blaze that started yesterday afternoon in the western part of the Trebević area. Mountain rescue and forestry teams are also taking part in the firefighting operation.
Difficult terrain is hindering the teams’ progress. The flames have reached the edge of the forested area but are not threatening settlements or any structures.
A fire that broke out in the city of Trebinje in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina has also not yet been extinguished. Helicopters operated by Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Ministry of Defence are providing aerial support for the response in the area.
Fire in Haskovo spreads across approximately 10,000 decares
A wildfire broke out in Bulgaria’s Haskovo region across an area of approximately 10,000 decares between the villages of Dinevo, Lyubenovo, Malevo and Krivo Pole.
Fourteen firefighting teams, soldiers, forestry officials and volunteers are responding to the fire.
Bulgaria’s Ministry of Defence said the flames started at an illegal landfill near the village of Dinevo. The ministry said the fire later spread to dry grass, shrubs and forested areas. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
The fire in Haskovo does not currently pose a threat to settlements.
