A forest fire on Greece’s Skyros Island damaged 3,636 dönüms, or approximately 363.6 hectares, of land.
Data collected on August 16 from the European Union’s Copernicus satellite system showed that the flames had devastated a large area of the island. Much of the damaged forest consisted of pine trees that had regrown after a major fire in the same area in 2008.
Response continues to address flare-ups
The Hellenic Fire Service announced that the fire had been largely brought under control and that there were no active flame fronts.
Despite this, teams continue working at small fire spots and in areas where smoke has been observed. Cooling operations are also being carried out in the damaged areas to prevent the fire from reigniting.
Cause of fire under investigation
The anti-arson investigation unit in Evia is investigating to determine how the fire started.
