Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe apologized to Chinese fans after a scandal over his comments about a meme. Asked which meme he found funniest, the Frenchman said his face had been placed on an image of “some Chinese dictator” and that he kept sending it to his friends.
A video filmed in April was published by the French podcast The Bridge. Mbappe did not name anyone, but his comments were understood in China as a reference to Mao Zedong.
“My words were thoughtless”
“My comment was thoughtless, and I now understand that it hurt many people in China. I apologize to everyone who was upset by my words,” Mbappe wrote in French, Chinese and English, adding that he deeply respects the Chinese people and their history.

Fallout from the scandal
Chinese beverage producer Dongpeng immediately terminated its contract with the footballer, while dairy company Mengniu also announced that it was ending its partnership with him. The Paper reported that China’s state television stopped broadcasting La Liga matches and events featuring Mbappe.
La Liga president Javier Tebas apologized for the damage, saying that one person’s remarks should not harm the league’s long-standing relationship with China, its more than 20 clubs and Chinese fans.
