Japanese activist Yusuke Furusawa takes to Tokyo’s busy streets alone almost every day with a Palestinian flag and a placard, protesting Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip.
“Do not remain silent. Freedom for Palestine throughout the world. Stop killing children. Stop bombing hospitals and schools,” he chants in an Al Jazeera report. “I support Palestine because we are human beings. I cannot trust the Israeli government because we are human beings,” the activist added.
He began protesting out of anger and helplessness
The 49-year-old carpenter said he began protesting because he felt anger and helplessness. He said Japanese society conditions people to remain silent about politics and international issues, and he wants to challenge that. He called the Japanese government’s neutral position on the war deplorable.
His placard reads in Japanese: “How many Palestinian children must die before people raise their voices?” Another reads: “Stop the genocide in Gaza.”
Passers-by respond in different ways: some take up his chants, others walk past, and some argue with him. Videos of his protests receive hundreds of thousands of views on social media.
