Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed halting airstrikes against cities hosting the US-mediated negotiations in the Russia-Ukraine war.
In a statement on Saturday, September 5, Zelenskyy said he had spoken that day with US representatives who had traveled to Moscow and that they had begun their work in Russia.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to observe a ceasefire in attacks on the cities where the talks were being held. He proposed that the measure remain in effect until the end of Saturday and also cover Sunday and Monday.
Zelenskyy also said Ukraine was ready to refrain from attacks on Moscow. The authorities in Kyiv expect Russia to adopt the same position regarding attacks on Kyiv.
Putin orders three-day halt to attacks on Kyiv
Before Zelenskyy's statement, the Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered attacks on Kyiv to be halted for three days starting at midnight local time.
US special representative Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, traveled to Moscow on Saturday for talks aimed at finding a solution to the ongoing conflict. The US representatives were expected to visit Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, for the first time on Sunday.
Trump said on Friday that Witkoff and Kushner would not take new ideas to Moscow, but would instead present a proposal aimed at ending the war.
